Letter from Ralph Vaughan Williams to Hubert Foss (OUP)

Letter No.: VWL1367

From R. Vaughan Williams,
The White Gates,
Westcott Road,
Dorking.

July 22 [1938]

Dear Foss,

I see in an acct sent to me by the Mech: Copyright Protection Society that my “In the Fen Country”1 has been recorded & that apparently one copy has been sold. Was this done with your leave & can you tell me anything about it? The manufacturer appears to be K. H. Leech.2
Yours sincerely,

R. Vaughan Williams

1. Catalogue of Works 1904/4.
2. Foss replied on 28th July that the recording had been made by a private recording company and was not for sale. The Mechanical Copyright Protection Society had a blanket permission covering recording companies of this kind, of which K.H. Leech was one, for private recordings to be made, provided the statutory royalty was paid.
