Letter from Ralph Vaughan Williams to Ursula Wood

Letter No.: VWL1437

From R. Vaughan Williams,
The White Gates,
Westcott Road,
Dorking.

[Sept 7th 1940]

My Dear

I went to town yesterday morning but everything was cancelled – so I came straight back.
Our dear niece Honorine (who married Bernard Brown) was killed by a bomb in Chelsea on Sunday night.
Please tell Maud

1. Date ‘Sept 10th’ noted in UVW’s hand. In fact the letter must have been written a few days earlier since VW refers to Honorine’s death as ‘Sunday night’. That was the night of 1st/2nd September and if the letter was any later than 8th September it would have been over a week earlier and Sunday a different date. Honorine’s death was a great blow to the VWs. See R.V.W.: a biography, p.235.
