13 Cheyne Walk

[October 1906]

Dear Mrs Hadley

I am today sending the band parts of P.P.1
As regards players.
If Miss Clenel [?] is coming she will of course lead – then Mrs Farrer, Miss Stack and one other shall play 1st vln and all the others 2nd violin –  but our best players (except the 3 above mentioned) must lead the 2nds – perhaps I shall have to alter this arrangement at the rehearsal – I cannot tell till then.
Is the Mrs Horne who is down on your list of subscribers the one who plays the ‘cello – if so ask her to play & say I asked you to.2
Yrs very truly

R. Vaughan Williams

P.S.  The music can be cut about & repeated if more … [incomplete]

1. Pilgrim’s Progress
2. Mrs Noel Farrer and Miss M. Stack are both mentioned as playing in the orchestra in the programme of a concert at the Passmore Edwards Settlement on 10th March 1907. The concert was arranged by Gustav Holst who taught at the settlement and was conducted by VW. The programme is preserved with the Hadley correspondence at the British Library, Add. MS.
