Letter from Ralph Vaughan Williams to Mary Glasgow
The White Gates,
Dorking.
Dear Miss Glasgow
Your letter arrived this morning. I had already put Elsie Suddaby’s name on the bills. Luckily there was time to take it out again before they were printed off—so they have to go out with no singer’s name as we could not delay printing any longer.
I have heard nothing from Boyd Neel.1 I have tried to ring you several times but only priority calls are allowed to London.
Yours sincerely
R.Vaughan Williams
1. The Boyd Neel Orchestra was to give the concert on 15 December, and VW was to conduct a work including the harp, according to related correspondence in the files. Suddaby had declined to perform at the fee offered to her.
