Letter from Ralph Vaughan Williams to Hubert Foss (OUP)

Letter No.: VWL1567

From R. Vaughan Williams,
The White Gates,
Westcott Road,
Dorking.

June 12 [1939]

Dear Foss

I have been asked by Percy Grainger to give an M.S. for his museum in Australia – I have found a rough draft of ‘Riders to the Sea’ which I am sending him – I presume you have no objection.1
Yours sincerely

R. Vaughan Williams

1.  There is a rough full score in the British Library (Add. MS 50416 – see Catalogue of Works 1936/6), so it is not clear if the score was sent.  However there is a letter from Grainger to VW (MS Mus. 1714/1/12) acknowledging the offer of the score and suggesting it is sent either to Schott in London or to the museum in Melbourne directly. The letter also refers to the two composers having met in Amsterdam.
