Letter from Ralph Vaughan Williams to the Editor of ‘Music & Letters’

Sir,

In a recent review of Gerald Finzi’s ‘Introit’ your contributor writes: “Mr. Finzi’s style in this work derives directly from the ... music of the later Vaughan Williams, particularly his fifth Symphony”.  Finzi’s ‘Introit’ was written about l925, my fifth Symphony about 1938.
Your reviewer evidently credits Mr. Finzi with a remarkably prophetic soul - or is the derivation possibly the other way round?
Yours faithfully,
R. Vaughan Williams. 1
