Letter from Ralph Vaughan Williams to Hubert Foss

Letter No.:
8th October, 1952

The White Gates,

Dear Hubert

Thank you very much for your letter. It was kind of Mrs. Foss and you to allow that invasion the other day.
I am quite in favour of the idea of television.1 Kenneth Wright must point out where the music wants adding to or subtracting from. I do not mind quoting from my earlier works but when I find, as I do, that some of my later works quote from this one then I must alter this rather than alter my later ones.

Hubert Foss, Esq.,
60, Corringham Road,

1. i.e. for the first performance of The Bridal Day, Catalogue ofWorks 1938/6, which took place on 5th June 1953 - see VWL2383. The producer was to be Kenneth Wright and the conductor Stanford Robinson. See Foss's letter to VW (VWL2480), to which this letter is a response.
