Letter from Ralph Vaughan Williams to Alan Frank (OUP)

Letter No.: VWL2696

From R. Vaughan Williams

Dorking.

June 21st 1953.

Dear Frank,

Thank you for your letter of June 19th. As regards “Shrubsole” you suggested at one time printing the tune. I did not like the idea, but on thinking it over I find that I should not object to a facsimile reprint of the original tune being included. The tune was printed in “The Gospel Magazine”, November 1779, but without the composer’s name or the name of the tune. In 1780 it appeared with its title and composer’s name in A Collection of Psalm Tunes by Stephen Addington … I suppose that both of these are in the British Museum.1
