Letter from Ralph Vaughan Williams to Alan Frank (OUP)

Letter No.: VWL2699

The White Gates,
Dorking.

June 28th 1953.

Dear Frank,

Herewith proofs up to page 88.1 I fear I do not like the title page. The words thoughts on belong to the Ninth Symphony only, so I have re-cast the title page, as you will see. I have also added a short preface (NOT foreword, please) which I understand you want.
I believe you have had all the music quotations checked in the Holst article as well as the Ninth Symphony article. Could you also verify my Latin tag “O si sic omnia”? I cannot find it in the Oxford quotation book.2

P.S. There are two dreadful problems on pages 66-68 & pages 78 & 9. I cannot accept your readers emendations. I hope you will accept mine.

1. Of Some thoughts on Beethoven’s Choral Symphony with Writings on Other Musical Subjects.
2. ‘O if all were thus’ – Juvenal.
