Letter from Ralph Vaughan Williams to Alan Frank (OUP)

Letter No.:
February 27th 1955.

From R. Vaughan Williams,
10, Hanover Terrace,
Regents Park,
London, N.W.1.

Dear Frank,1

By all means have Denis Wright: but I want to know exactly what he means to do. Does he mean to transpose it all up a fourth? Which will I think mean altering some of the instrumental passages. Or does he mean to keep the original key and alter those very characteristic passages from BB flat to FF, which will take away a lot of the character of the music.2

1. Music Editor at Oxford University PressĀ in succession to Norman Peterkin (1947); Head of Music from 1954 until his retirement in 1975.
2. Frank had written on 25th February asking VW about a suggestion from Denis Wright that the Tuba Concerto (Catalogue of Works 1954/2) should be arranged for euphonium and Brass and Military bands.
