THE LETTERS OF RALPH VAUGHAN WILLIAMS

Letter from Ralph Vaughan Williams to Frank Howes

Letter No. VWL3164

Letter from Ralph Vaughan Williams to Frank Howes

Letter No.: VWL3164

The White Gates,
Dorking,

10th August, 1949.

Dear Howes1,

Confidential

I see in the “Times” that the notice of my Symphony calls it “the War Symphony”.2
I dislike that implied connection very much. Of course there is nothing to prevent any writer from expressing his opinion to that effect in a notice, but it is quite a different thing, this reference to a supposed title, as if it was official on my part.
Yours sincerely

R Vaughan Williams

(R. Vaughan Williams).

Frank Howes, Esq.,
“The Times”,
Printing House Square,
London, E.C.1.

1.  Chief music critic of The Times.
2.  Presumably a notice for the Sixth Symphony.
