Letter from Ralph Vaughan Williams to Guy Oldham

Letter No.: VWL3801

The White Gates,
Dorking, Surrey.

12th April, 1950.

Dear Mr. Oldham,
Thank you very much for all your help. The parts are all ready now.
I am afraid I horrified you with my trombones but remember
(1). We have no organ;
(2). Bach often doubles voice parts with trombones.2 That fugue subject which comes in “Acis and Galatea” is also in one of Bach’s violin fugues which is also arranged for organ by him.
I think the theme is fairly common property among 18th century composers.

Yours sincerely
R. Vaughan Williams

(R. Vaughan Williams).

Guy Oldham, Esq.,
61, Woodcrest Road,
Purley, Surrey.

1. Oldham had been copying parts for VW’s arrangement of Bach’s cantata BWV 21.
2. This sentence appears to have been struck through.
