Dear Atkins
I look forward with great pleasure to hearing my Sancta Civitas at Worcester. It is most kind of you to suggest my coming to conduct it myself and I should like to accept very much if I feel sure I can secure an adequate performance. It is a difficult work & requires a good deal of rehearsal – I think I ought to have at least 90 minutes piano rehearsal with the choir (they being previously of course note perfect); At least 60 minutes with the orchestra alone – and at least 60 minutes full rehearsal.
The work – as I daresay you know – takes about 40 minutes to perform.
I look forward very much to seeing your new edition of the St John Passion.
Yours sincerely
R Vaughan Williams
