Letter from Ralph Vaughan Williams to Nancy Evans

Letter No.:
March 28th 1954.

From R. Vaughan Williams,
10, Hanover Terrace,
Regents Park,
London, N.W.1.

My dear Nancy,
Ursula tells me that you are unhappy that This Day1 and the Violin Songs2 are described as being for Soprano. But my publisher tells me that any song which goes up to high A would be most misleadingly called anything but Soprano. So if you will keep a tame high A in your kennel (and a lovely one at that) what are we to do?
Love from
Uncle Ralph

, eight Housman songs for voice and violin, composed in 1927 and revised in 1954; the revised version was performed by Evans and Leonard Hirsch at the Wigmore Hall on May 26 1955.
