Dear Mr Boyd Neel
Thankyou so much for your letter – no one can doubt now that A. Boult is a great conductor, he created the slow movement (you should heard the first rehearsal!).1 If I ever write anything for strings I shall be proud for you to play it.
Yrs very sincerely
R Vaughan Williams

PS Delighted to go through the Tallis2 when you like

1. Adrian Boult had conducted the first performance of VW’s Symphony no.4 on 10 April 1935.
2. VW’s Fantasia on a theme by Thomas Tallis. The Boyd Neel Orchestra would make the first recording of the work in 1936.
