Miss Elizabeth Maconchy has been my pupil for nearly four years. I have great pleasure in testifying to her industry, good character and power to profit by instruction. She would I feel sure be able to take full advantage of the opportunities provided by the Mendelssohn Scholarship.1

1.  Elizabeth Maconchy did not win the Mendelssohn Scholarship, but did win the Blumenthal Travelling Scholarship (see Grove Dictionary of Music, 5th edition) which enabled her to travel to Prague to study with Jirák in 1930.
