1. On this concert which VW had proposed to the BBC see Jennifer Doctor, ‘Working for her own salvation’ in Lewis Foreman (ed.), Vaughan Williams in Perspective (Albion Music, 1998), pp. 194-5. The final programme, conducted by VW, is listed in Benjamin Britten, Letters from a Life, vol.1, footnote to Letter 65 to Grace Williams.
2. The overture performed was in fact the Comedy Overture by Maconchy, and the programme included Williams’ Two Psalms for soprano and chamber orchestra. See VWL1337 for further correspondence with the BBC on this concert.
