Letter from Ralph Vaughan Williams to Daniel Jones

Letter No.: VWL1394

From R. Vaughan Williams,
The White Gates,
Westcott Road,
Dorking.

April 6th [1940]

Dear Mr Jones

You may remember me as being one of the committee who were present when you were elected Mendelssohn Scholar.
I hear in a roundabout way that you are looking for a post – I should like, if I can, to put your name forward when the opportunity arrives. But before doing so I ought to have a list of your qualifications, musical, academic, scholastic & literary.1
I ought to add that the chances of my being able to achieve anything are very remote for as you know there are at least 100 well qualified candidates for every post.
Yours sincerely

R. Vaughan Williams

1. Jones must have replied promptly, as a few days later VW wrote to Harry Farjeon about Jones. See VWL1393.
