Letter from Ralph Vaughan Williams to Victor Hely-Hutchinson (BBC)

Letter No.: VWL1959

The White Gates,
Dorking.

[October 1944]

Personal

Dear Hely Hutchinson

This has nothing to do with the anthem!1
An ex pupil of mine Grace WILLIAMS has written a “symphonic impression” called “Owen Glendower” – I do not know this work but I think highly of her other compositions. 2
I believe she sent it to the BBC & the reading committee thought well of it & told her so.
Is there any chance of getting it on to a programme before long?3
Yrs sincerely

R Vaughan Williams

1. VW had been been in correspondence with Hely-Hutchinson about the imminent recording of Thanksgiving for Victory (Catalogue of Works 1944/4).
2. Symphonic impressions (based on the life of Owen Glendower). On this letter see VWL1952.
3. It is clear from VWL1952 that Hely-Hutchinson gave a non-committal reply.
