From R. Vaughan Williams,

London, N.W.1.

January 19th 1958.

My dear John,

It is most exciting to think that we are going to hear you and your orchestra play my No. 8 again.  It occurs to me that if you do not want to be bothered by the tuned gongs, that a similar emotional effect can be got by doubling the lowest bell note – (is it D?  I forget what key its in and have lost my score) – where ever it occurs with an ordinary deep TAM TAM.  I tried this out the other day, and it was quite successful.
Love from us both
