Letter from Ralph Vaughan Williams to Maud Karpeles

Letter No.:

Dear Maud
I'm going through the dances & making bassoon parts - these will have to be copied - most of the existing parts have no bowing or extant marks - Miss Avril1 ought to go carefully through them & the wind marking them - any orchestra unless it has marks plays everything like the Hallelujah chorus.
If you care to come & hear my new tune tomorrow do come - but it will be rather bad as the chorus have not had it for a 4tnight & they forget so quickly
I send you a copy to amuse you
R Vaughan Williams

1. Elsie Avril was a violinist with the English Folk Dance Society.
