The White Gates

April 4 [1940s?]

My most beloved Jean
I did not answer your dear letter because you were away – & then your phone call forestalled me.
– I wish I cd have heard you – I did hear the singer again later –  but the reception was not good – the strings almost inaudible – These control people do not seem to have learnt the elements of their job.  I long to hear more about Paris & to see those stockings (in situ of course)
I wish I had seen more of you at the fest1 – that’s the worst of all that music it leaves no time for “all that” – but we had a few precious moments didn’t we
all love
Uncle Ralph

1. Perhaps the Dorking Festival, which took place in Spring, and where Jean played viola.
